Adventure travel insurance: an activity checklist
A city name alone cannot tell you whether your activities fit a policy. Build your comparison around what you will do, where you will do it and how you could reach medical care.

Write down the activity, not just “adventure”
Use the names in your itinerary: hiking, technical climbing, scuba diving, skiing or a guided excursion. Record maximum altitude or depth, whether you need technical equipment, and whether the activity is guided, independent or competitive. Take this list to the policy activity schedule.
A plan that lists one activity may treat a related activity differently. Check the rules for your country of residence and selected plan; avoid applying an altitude limit from another market.
Check the route in stages
- City base: check medical care, belongings and disruption to booked transport.
- Transfer to an activity: identify road, boat or flight connections and which prepaid bookings would be affected by a delay.
- Activity day: compare the exact activity, equipment and guide requirements with the wording.
- Remote section: check communications, assistance procedures and how transport to medical care is arranged.

Separate rescue from medical and trip cover
Read the benefits separately: rescue from the activity site, medical evacuation, treatment, repatriation and cancellation are different questions. A rescue membership and travel insurance are different products. Confirm who authorizes assistance and what you must do before arranging transport yourself.

Questions to take to the provider
My trip includes a city break and a trek. Which part determines the cover?
Check the complete itinerary, including the most demanding activity. Ask whether the selected plan covers each activity and whether an upgrade or separate arrangement is needed.
Does medical evacuation include finding me on a remote trail?
Do not assume it does. Ask separately about search, rescue, transport to a medical facility and subsequent medical evacuation, including authorization and location requirements.
